Week Three Is Where Everyone Quits

Retinoids work. That has not been seriously in dispute for forty years. What is in dispute, quietly and constantly, is whether the average person will ever find out.

Here is the shape of the problem. You start a retinoid. Weeks one and two pass without incident and you assume you are one of the lucky ones. Week three arrives and your skin is flaking at the sides of the nose, tight across the cheeks, faintly pink under any decent light. Nothing you apply afterward sits right. You conclude the product is too strong for you, and you stop.

Week four is roughly when the results begin.

That is the whole tragedy of the category. The adjustment period and the payoff sit directly next to each other, and most people abandon the effort within days of it becoming worthwhile.

What is happening in those three weeks is not damage. Retinoids accelerate the rate at which your skin turns over its cells. The barrier is briefly running a supply chain it has never had to run before, shedding faster than it is resurfacing, and the visible result is dryness and sensitivity. Dermatology has a word for the process. It is an adaptation, not an injury, and it resolves on its own if the skin is supported while it happens.

Which points at the actual formulation question. Not how strong can we make this, but how do we keep the barrier intact while the renewal runs.

Bakuchiol is one answer. It is extracted from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia and it engages the same retinoid receptors, which means it contributes to the renewal rather than merely diluting it. It is also anti-inflammatory, so it works against the exact symptom that ends most retinoid attempts. Peptides and green tea polyphenols do the rest of the work, holding barrier function together during the weeks when it is under the most strain.

The Galliformes Regenerating Serum is built on that logic. Three renewal actives running in parallel instead of one aggressive ingredient running alone, buffered deliberately so the first month is survivable.

If you are starting: two or three evenings a week, not nightly. Follow with something that seals. Sunscreen every morning without exception, because accelerated turnover means newer skin at the surface and newer skin burns.

And when week three arrives, understand what you are looking at. It is not the product failing. It is the product working, at the only stage where that is indistinguishable from the opposite.
