Sometime in the next few weeks, your skin will start behaving differently. Tighter after cleansing. Flakier around the nose. Products that felt fine in July will start to sting slightly. Most people assume they've developed a sensitivity or that a product has gone bad.
Neither is usually true. What changed is the air.
Skin hydration depends heavily on the humidity gradient between your stratum corneum and the environment. In humid summer air, that gradient is shallow, and water leaves your skin slowly. As absolute humidity falls through September and October, the gradient steepens and transepidermal water loss accelerates. Your barrier is doing the same work it was doing in August. The conditions just got harder.
There's a second factor most people miss: indoor heating. The moment heating systems come on, indoor relative humidity can drop into the twenties. That's drier than many desert climates, and you're sitting in it for most of your waking hours.
The consequence is measurable. As the stratum corneum loses water, corneocytes shrink and the lipid matrix between them develops microscopic gaps. That's what makes skin feel rough. It's also why actives suddenly sting: those gaps let irritants reach nerve endings that were previously well insulated.
The fix is not to abandon your actives. It's to reinforce the lipid matrix before the gradient steepens, not after your skin is already compromised. Barrier lipids, humectants that hold water in the upper layers, and an occlusive step at night do more in September than they will in November, because you're preventing the loss rather than repairing it.
