The Truth About "Natural" Skincare (And Why It’s More Complicated Than You Think)

Read the last updates and news about our brand and line of products.

There's a version of the natural skincare conversation that makes sense: avoid unnecessary fillers, prefer well-studied ingredients over trendy ones, and be skeptical of formulas padded with fragrance and dyes. That's reasonable. But somewhere along the way, "natural" became shorthand for "safe" and "synthetic" became a synonym for "suspicious" — and that's where things go sideways. Poison ivy is natural. So is lead. Formaldehyde is produced by your own body. The idea that a plant-derived ingredient is inherently safer than a lab-synthesized one doesn't hold up under scrutiny. What actually matters is the ingredient itself, the concentration, and how it interacts with your specific skin. Some of the most effective skincare ingredients are synthetic — not because they're engineered to cut corners, but because the synthetic form is purer, more stable, and more bioavailable than the plant-extracted version. Synthetic hyaluronic acid, for example, is structurally identical to what your skin produces naturally and behaves the same way. Vitamin C derivatives synthesized in a lab can be more stable and effective than ascorbic acid extracted directly from citrus. What Stiltskin cares about isn't whether an ingredient is natural or synthetic. It's whether it works, whether it's safe, whether it's been studied, and whether it belongs in a formula at the concentration present. That's a clinical standard, not a marketing position. The other thing worth knowing: truly "natural" formulas often have a stability problem. Without preservation, products grown in nature don't stay safe. The mold you can't see in your preservative-free face cream is more concerning than the "chemical-sounding" ingredient that's keeping it from growing. Read labels carefully. Ask better questions. Don't let a leaf icon on the packaging make the decision for you.
