This one’s uncomfortable, but worth knowing: if your skin has been consistently dry, irritated, or reactive, the moisturizer you’re relying on to fix it might actually be making it worse.
Most drugstore and mid-range moisturizers are built around occlusives and emollients — ingredients that smooth the skin surface and slow water loss. That part is fine. The problem is what else tends to come along with them: fragrance, alcohol, essential oils, and a long tail of preservatives and emulsifiers that can disrupt the skin barrier over time, even in people who don’t consider themselves to have sensitive skin.
Fragrance is the big one. It’s the leading cause of contact dermatitis from skincare products, and it shows up in formulas labeled “gentle,” “calming,” and even “fragrance-free” (because fragrance-free and unscented are different things — unscented products can still contain masking fragrances). Over time, repeated low-level irritation from fragrance accumulates. You might not notice a reaction after the first use or the tenth. By the hundredth, your skin is sensitized in ways that are hard to trace back to the source.
A genuinely barrier-supporting moisturizer leads with the right actives: ceramides to restore the lipid matrix of the skin, fatty acids to reinforce the barrier, and humectants to hold water in. Everything else in the formula should support those actives — not compete with them.
